Dr Florian Falter has been a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge for the past 20 years. Papworth is the biggest cardiac unit in the UK, with a busy surgical heart failure program including transplantation and mechanical assist therapy. It is also one of 5 centres for the advanced therapy of respiratory failure.
After numerous clinical roles including end of life care and organ donation, Florian has more recently dedicated himself more to his academic interests. His primary regions of interest are extracorporeal circulation, particularly cardiopulmonary bypass, Point of Care laboratory testing aa well as coagulation and anticoagulation management during cardiac surgery. He also has an interest in efficiency in healthcare and lean but safe practice, which has led to a successful co-operation with several business schools in London. He regularly takes in MBA students as interns and for company projects.
Florian regularly lectures nationally and internationally and is the author of numerous papers as well as three textbooks. In 2012 he was awarded a visiting professorship at Columbia University in NYC; he lectures at the University of Bristol and is heavily involved in the perfusion MSc course thought there.
Florian is one of the founding members of the Networking World Anaesthesia Convention (NWAC) and has chaired this not-for-profit educational organisation from 2013 to 2018.
In his spare time he enjoys diving and works as a scuba diving instructor.
