Mezahir Guliyev

Dr. Mazahir Guliyev, MD, PhD, is an ENT and facial plastic surgeon and Associate Professor (Docent) at the Department of Otolaryngology, Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after Aziz Aliyev in Baku, Azerbaijan. With over 20 years of clinical, academic, and surgical experience, he has earned a national and international reputation for his pioneering work in rhinoplasty, revision nasal reconstruction, and innovative surgical instrumentation.

Dr. Guliyev received his medical degree from Azerbaijan Medical University and completed advanced training in otorhinolaryngology and facial plastic surgery through fellowships and masterclasses in Germany, Turkey, Russia, and Italy. His areas of expertise include functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), pediatric septoplasty, nasal valve reconstruction, and complex revision rhinoplasty.

He is the founder and current president of the Azerbaijan Rhinologists Society and has been instrumental in organizing the first and second International Rhinology Congresses and cadaver-based live surgery courses in Azerbaijan. Dr. Guliyev is a member of multiple professional societies, including the Turkish Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Turkish Rhinologic Society, and the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (EAFPS).

Dr. Guliyev has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and is the holder of 9 patents related to novel surgical instruments and methods. His recent innovations have garnered global attention, especially the development of:

1.The Rhino-Graft Technique – for caudal septum stabilization using costal cartilage in revision rhinoplasty;

2.A Custom Serrated Osteotome – to accurately mark the lateral osteotomy line prior to piezo-assisted bone cuts;

3.Partial Septal Overlap Suture Technique – for correcting dorsal septal deviations in crooked noses.

All three techniques have been published in PubMed-indexed international journals, highlighting his role as a thought leader in reconstructive nasal surgery.

In addition to his academic and surgical contributions, Dr. Guliyev is also the official author of three original medical concepts, each registered and certified by the Intellectual Property Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2025:

1.NEFES Score (Nasal Esthetic and Functional Evaluation Score) – a combined scale for evaluating both functional and esthetic outcomes in rhinoplasty;

2.Tri-Force Stabilizing Concept – a biomechanical theory of nasal structural balance based on three primary force vectors;

3.Innovative Correction Method for Linear Deviation of the Nose – a novel osteotomy-based technique for correcting straight-line nasal deformities.
