Dr. Weiyun Chen is associate professor of Applied Exercise Science (formerly Health and Fitness) and Director of the Physical Activity and Health Laboratory in the School of Kinesiology. Prior to her time at U-M, Dr. Chen was assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Temple University. She earned her Ph.D. in Kinesiology at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.
Dr. Chen’s research focuses on developing and examining technology-enhanced physical activity (PA) interventions to promote health, cognition, and psychological well-being in school-aged children, young adults, and older adults. Dr. Chen has delivered over 120 presentations at international and national conferences and conducted 30 workshops for training physical education teachers. She first authored one book, two book chapters, and published moe than 65 peer-reviewed research articles. She served a 3-year term as chair of AERA SIG and AAHPERD NASPE C & I Academy. She also chaired AERA SIG Scholar Lecture Committee, AAHPERD Research Writing Award Committee, and AAHPERD Pedagogy Panel Review Committee. She served as associate editor for Journal of Teaching in Physical Education. Currently, Dr. Chen is associate editor for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport since 2013 and academic editor for Medicine since 2018.
Dr. Chen is a Fellow in SHAPE American. She is a member of the Momentum Center for Driving Discovery to End Child Obesity in School of Public Health and the Center for Human Growth and Development at the University of Michigan.
