Ophthalmologist, Certified Specialist by the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology
Dr. Islane Verçosa is an Ophthalmologist, certified specialist by the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology, and holds a Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Health. She is the Director of the Islane Verçosa Eye Clinic – CAVIV and of the NGO CAVIVER – Center for Visual Improvement “Seeing Hope Restored”.
She serves as Chief and Preceptor of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Medical Residency Program at the General Hospital of Fortaleza and coordinates the Childhood Blindness Prevention Project in the State of Ceará, Brazil.
Author of the book Cataract in Children, published in 2008 together with Dr. Márcia Tartarella, Dr. Verçosa has also contributed to several chapters of Brazilian Ophthalmology publications. More recently, in 2025, she published the book “And That’s How It All Began…”, which tells the story of her professional journey and the history of childhood blindness prevention in Ceará.
Dr. Verçosa served as President of the Brazilian Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology from 2007 to 2009 and of the Ophthalmology Society of Ceará from 1999 to 2000. She is nationally recognized for her outstanding contributions to Pediatric Ophthalmology and to childhood blindness prevention initiatives in Brazil.
