Hsiao-Hsien Kao, is an emergency nurse practitioner who frequently assists patients with wound dressing changes and simple wound sutures in the emergency room. The most common question patients ask is whether their wound can come into contact with water. Our cultural tradition often tells us that wounds should not come into contact with water to avoid infection. However, based on recent evidence, it is clear that water exposure does not increase the infection rate and can also enhance patient comfort.
