In 1983, Jan began her nursing career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse at the age of 19. In 1987 she graduated from Samuel Merritt College of Nursing/St. Mary’s College with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and worked in various areas that included the Intensive Care Unit, emergency department, trauma department and, flight nursing. In 2002, she accepted the Trauma Coordinator position at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC). During the next 12 years, Jan obtained the first trauma verification from the American College of Surgeons for ARMC and went on to have four more successful trauma verifications with no deficiencies. Jan became a member of the Trauma Managers Association of California (TMAC) and served as the Chair for the Injury Prevention Committee and representative for the State Trauma Advisory Committee. In addition, Jan obtained her certification as a child passenger safety technician, Instructor for the Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses course and became a member of Sigma Theta Tau. In 2008, she obtained a Master of Science in Nursing and a Masters in Healthcare Administration. In 2013, Jan transitioned to Manager for Emergency and Trauma Services at ARMC and served on various county committees. As an advocate for learning, she has worked as an adjunct clinical instructor for LVN and RN programs. Jan graduated from the Southern California State Consortium with her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2018 and created the first Nurse Scientist position at ARMC that she currently holds. She is actively involved in trauma research and developing an evidence-based practice program.
